Judy Blunt was born and raised on a cattle ranch near Regina, Montana. Her most popular novel, or essay, is Breaking Clean. It is very interesting to me how she put her story in writing. In an interview (for link click here), she expressed how she wrote the essay in college at the University of Montana. As a second year student in journalism, it was homework one evening to "write your Montana experience," said her professor, William Bevis. She said it was so "difficult to capture in four typewritten pages than those of my classmates, most of whom were under twenty and could count the months of their 'Montana experience' on their fingers." She most inspired me when she was sharing her story in an auditorium filled with friends and/or classmates. She said she watched the audience as they "absorbed my story, my words. My life." She explained how she felt the "power" of her writing for the first time with every human in the building.
A few fun facts about her:
· Award-winning memoir and most popular essay is Breaking Clean
· Breaking Clean is actually a collection of linked essays from her childhood and life
· Her essays and poems have been in The New York Times, Big Sky Journal, and Oprah Magazine
My Personal Approach:
Judy Blunt is relevant to her story Breaking Clean because it is the story of her life being raised on a farm. I have a farm of my own and I can personally relate to the experiences she had. I ride horses and raise cows with my family. I also invite friends to join me to see what the countryside is really like. I think it is critical for people to realize how divergent others are...just an hour outside of our city! I never realized how poor people were until I saw the house that a man lives in that works for my family. I almost cried because I realized how blessed and thankful I should really be for all that God gives me. My overall opinion of this essay is it has an exceptional point of view on life from a good person’s perspective.
