Ch. 13

Do you think it was acceptable for Tea Cake to take Janie's money and throw a party without telling her? Does the fact that he returned it make it acceptable or should he have never taken it without asking in the first place? In your opinion, is Tea Cake still a good fit as a husband for Janie after these actions two weeks into their money?

  1. No, I don't think it was ok for Tea Cake to take Janie's money. In a situation where someone of higher status and wealth (Janie) married someone of lower wealth (Tea Cake), it was likely that money would be an issue. By taking the money without telling Janie, Tea Cake demonstrated his immaturity and naivete. He should have known Janie would have been touchy about money, so he should have told her he borrowed it. However, I still believe Tea Cake is a good match for Janie. He treats her well and I believe they are in love, which is all she really wants.

  2. No, I definitely don't think that it was ok for Teacake to take the money. Sure, he did end up returning with more money than he took (after he gambled) but it's still ridiculous that he took it in the first place. Teacake is younger than Janie and like Robert said I think he's pretty immature. I think Teacake is still a fit husband for Janie because he made a mistake and everyone makes mistake. Teacake treats her right.

  3. No it was not acceptable for Tea Cake to take Janie's money and then throw a party with the money. If he maybe used it for a good reason such as buying food or a house with it, it would be acceptable but the fact that he used the money to throw a party is not okay. Even the fact that he remade the money and gave it back to Janie does not make up for the fact that he stole from Janie for a non good reason. He should have asked her or at least told her he was going to borrow it. I think the fact that he took her money does not make Tea Cake not a good husband for Janie. I believe this because everybody make mistakes and this was just an accidental mistake of Tea Cake's. It does not mean that he can no longer be Janie's husband.

  4. No, it was not acceptable for Tea Cake to take Janie's money and throw a party with her money or her permission. The fact that he returned the money doesn't make up for his actions. He should have never stollen the money in the first place. Although he stole her money and used it without her permission, I still do believe that Tea Cake is a good match for Janie. Even though he stole her money, he is still a better husband then Logan or Joe. He makes her happier then they could, combined. It was not right of Tea Cake to steal Janies money. Nothing he does makes it acceptable.

  5. What he did was definitely wrong. He did make it up to her, but he should have just told her his plans in the first place. Knowing Janie, she would have been fine with him throwing a party. But, I still have to say he is the best fit for her. Her past husbands would have probably taken her money and not come back. I think both her and Tea Cake have some learning to do in terms of being married. Yes this is Janie's third marriage, but this one is different they both just need to learn from each other. Tea Cake is younger and of lesser status, so, especially in those times, the proper thing to do is consult and ask permission.

  6. No, it was not acceptable for Tea Cake to take Janie's money and throw a party without her permission. If he had used the money for something more reasonable it might be acceptable. Even the fact that he returned the money to her does not make up for his actions. He shouldn't have taken the money from her in the first place. Despite Tea Cake's actions, I still think he is a good fit for Janie as a husband. He is a better husband to her than Logan or Joe ever were and he treats her right.

  7. No. Tea Cake stealing Janie's money to throw a party was not acceptable. Even if he had asked Janie for permission, he still took advantage of being married to a wealthy widow. Although, he did return the money I think this is a very bad sign for the future of their relationship. The fact that he was willing to steal so easily without even feeling that guilty makes me think he will do it again. His gambling ways will not last long and then what will he do for money? Although I do not know how the marriage will turn out I still think Tea Cake is a good fit for Janie. He is truly bringing out Janie's true self, which has been hidden for so long. However, I hope Tea Cake learns from this and never does it again because the last thing Janie wants is to feel as if he only married her for her money just like the other lady form Eatonville.

  8. I don’t think it was acceptable for Tea Cake to take Janie’s money. It seemed that he took it, aware that she would find out, and figured that he could probably mollify her in some way afterwards. And that’s exactly what he does. I think that it was very impulsive of him to just take the money and spend it all towards dinner for a bunch of random people. He should’ve told Janie that he was taking it because by taking it and not telling her, he made Janie doubt him, and since he loves her, he probably didn’t want that to happen either. I also don’t think it’s alright after he returned the money back by winning it because the money wasn’t his to take in the first place. Although I am against Tea Cake’s judgment about taking the money and spending it, I still think he is good for Janie because they both love each other and are good with each other.

  9. No, I don't think it was ok for Tea Cake to take Janie's money without asking. It was immature and inconsiderate for him to do that and even though he did return the money, it doesn't change the fact that he betrayed her trust. This is a different kind of betrayal than what Jody did to Janie because Tea Cake apologized and knew what he did was wrong. I still think that Tea Cake is a good husband for Janie because he made one mistake and fixed it immediately. His other actions towards Janie have been nothing but positive and I think he is the closest thing Janie can find to her dream husband.

  10. No, I don't think it was acceptable for Tea Cake to throw a party with Janie's money, without her permission. The fact that he returned it is good because he is trying to fix his mistakes, but it does not erase the initial act; he never should have taken it without asking, in a way he betrayed her like Jody did. I still think that Tea Cake is a good husband because he is caring towards Janie and it is clear that he is in love with her. He does pay her back in the end, which leads me to believe that there is still love and trust in this relationship that at worst was bruised a bit. Just because he did one thing wrong does not mean that he wouldn't be a good husband towards Janie becasue doing one thing wrong doesn't mean that you are a terrible person unfit to be married.

  11. I don't think it was OK for Tea Cake to take Janie's money. It would have been one thing if he had asked her first, or even if he had taken it to buy groceries or something else that would have benefitted both of them, but the fact that he took it to throw a part and NOT even invite her is unacceptable. Even though he returns the money, I still disagree with the principle of the matter. I wouldn't consider it stealing, since Janie is his wife and technically what's hers is his and vice versa, but it was definitely a dishonest act. I do think that Tea Cake is a good husband for Janie - everyone makes mistakes, and this is Tea Cake's first one.
