Song - "Goshen" by Beirut
Photograph - This photograph, taken by James Filo, of students who were at a protest at Kent State University when the National Guard fired into the crowd.
Piece of clothing - a black umbrella (if that counts as clothing)
Food - Lobster. To cook them you have to boil them alive, which makes me sad, so I find the dish kind of mournful.
Character - Teddy Daniels from the movie Shutter Island (played by Leonardo DiCaprio)
Cool blog post Charlie! I'm gonna have to disagree on one of them though. The photo of the students at Kent State University I don't necessarily think is mournful. I think it's sad but I think what is being portrayed is surprise and disbelief. I feel like mourning would be just sitting by the body.
ReplyDeleteInteresting! I might have to disagree a little too, but about the clothing. I think a person might carry a black umbrella around, but I don't think that necessarily gives off the tone of being mournful. Rather, I think a black umbrella could be considered classy and not mournful..
ReplyDeleteAlthough yes, I do see why you would think it black umbrellas would be mournful. I think in this context, the picture you chose gave off the tone of being mournful because the person carrying the umbrella also wore all black.
I think "Goshen" by Beirut is the perfect song for mournful. Not only do the lyrics match mournful, but the piano and trumpets in the background go along perfectly as well. (Plus, its just an excellent song.) However, I agree with Annie that the photograph was more sad that mournful.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Charlie! Responding to what Annie and Paige are saying about the picture, I actually did think that the second picture with the women fit because I consider part of mourning to be the surprise and disbelief of loss. Also, I even liked the picture with the guy dressed in black with the umbrella as a portrayal of mourning. The tone of the picture with the dark colors alone makes it sort of sad, and in addition, from the picture made me think of someone at a funeral. The rain even adds to the draining sadness and grief of the person which I feel does a good job of expressing the internal depression of the person in addition to just telling the weather.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the picture at Kent state isn't very mournful. She's obviously upset about the death but I think to be mournful it should be a little more subdued or somber maybe. And I think Leonardo DiCaprio was a perfect example because he's Leonardo DiCaprio and he's perfect for anything.
